The Regional Forum on the Protection of the Right to Education during Insecurity and Armed Conflict in the Middle East and North Africa Region was organized from 19-21 January 2014 in  Jordan as one of the main activities of a joint project between the United Nations Training and Documentation Centre for South-west Asia and the Arab Region (OHCHR-Doha Centre) and Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC) – a program of Education Above All Foundation.

At What Age?...are school-children employed, married and taken to court? - Trends over Time (Annotated version)

This report provides analysis of legal minimum ages for education, marriage, employment and criminal responsibility across 187 countries and raises questions regarding the cross-section of these issues and their effect on the right to education. Based on States Parties’ reports to the CRC Committee and analysed through the lens of the 4As, the report stresses the fundamental importance of eliminating contradictory legislation and practices that still undermine the right to education.

Exploitation sous prétexte d’éducation : Progrès mitigés dans la lutte contre la mendicité forcée des enfants au Sénégal

Ce rapport examine le bilan mitigé du Sénégal dans ses efforts pour résoudre ce problème au cours de l’année écoulée, depuis qu’un incendie a ravagé une école coranique installée dans une maison délabrée à Dakar, causant la mort de huit garçons. Après cet incendie, le président Macky Sall s’est engagé à prendre des mesures immédiates pour fermer les écoles où les élèves vivent dans des conditions insalubres ou sont exploités par des maîtres qui les forcent à mendier et leur infligent des punitions sévères s’ils ne parviennent pas à rapporter le quota d’argent exigé.

Exploitation in the Name of Education: Uneven Progress in Ending Forced Child Begging in Senegal

The  report examines Senegal’s mixed record in addressing the problem in the year since a fire ripped through a Quranic boarding school in Dakar housed in a makeshift shack, killing eight boys. After the fire, President Macky Sall pledged to take immediate action to close schools where boys live in unsafe conditions or are exploited by teachers, who force them to beg and inflict severe punishment when the boys fail to return a set quota of money. While important legislation has advanced, authorities have taken little concrete action to end this abuse.

Entitled to Education: using International Human Rights Law to Advocate for the Right to Education in the Occupied Palestinian Territory

In spite of the impressive indicators regarding education enrolment and attendance in the occupied Palestinian territoty, access to quality education remains significantly compromised. The educational process has been obstructed and interrupted, and the dignity and safety of students and teaching staff violated in the process. The primary responsibility for this lies with the conflicting parties that continue and prolong a situation of protracted conflict and humanitarian crisis.
